Chealse boss Pochettino remains optimistic despite EFL loss to non-league side Middlesbrough

Mauricio Pochettino’s team faces the challenge of overturning a 1-0 deficit at Stamford Bridge after a surprising defeat by Championship side Middlesbrough in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

FA Cup Fourth Round Draw – 2024

Although the Blues suffered their first League Cup loss to lower-league opponents since 1999, Pochettino is confident in his team’s performance.

He expressed, “The pressure and intensity were good; we can’t complain. In the first half, we made some mistakes, giving them scoring opportunities. They were aggressive and played with a deep block, making it challenging for us to break through.”

Despite Chelsea’s missed opportunities and 72% possession at the Riverside Stadium, they couldn’t overcome Michael Carrick’s resilient squad.

Looking ahead to the second leg on January 23, Pochettino emphasized the need for a positive mindset, recognizing the chance to rectify their mistakes and secure a spot in the Wembley final, which remains within reach for both teams.

Pochettino reflected, “Assessing the performance, overall, we were the superior side, creating more and clearer chances. However, we lacked clinical finishing. This has been a recurring theme this season, with numerous games lost due to our inability to convert chances.”
