Toni Kroos was unequivocal in naming the four best players he has called teammates during his illustrious career.
Kroos’ future at Real Madrid had been uncertain due to stalled contract renewal talks beyond the current season.
Nevertheless, few anticipated the German midfielder would end his playing career after this summer’s European Championship.
On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, Kroos made the unexpected announcement that he will retire from professional football after Euro 2024.
Kroos has enjoyed a remarkably successful career with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, securing seven league titles and five Champions League trophies.
His Real Madrid club appearance could come in the Champions League final on June 1, vs Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.
Kroos also played a crucial role in Germany’s World Cup victory in 2014, a triumph that preceded his transfer from Bayern to Madrid.
Over his 17-year professional career, Kroos has played alongside and against numerous elite players.However, he had no doubts when asked to name the best.
In a 2022 interview with German streamer Elias Nerlich, Kroos was asked to identify the best goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, and striker he has shared the pitch with.
“My career is testament to the extraordinary players I’ve encountered, both as teammates and opponents,” Kroos said.
“But if I must choose, I prefer these four: In goal, Manuel Neuer, both as a teammate and a rival. Best defender: Sergio Ramos. Midfielder: Luka Modric. And in attack, clearly: Cristiano [Ronaldo].”
During the same interview, tennis legend Roger Federer asked which midfielder Kroos felt he worked best with on the pitch.
“With Casemiro and Luka Modric, two who excel in defensive tasks, we were very compact defensively,” Kroos replied.
‘At the same time, we represented football, control, and special moments up front. The coordination between defense and attack was almost perfect.
“Over the years, each of us understood which spaces to occupy and defend. We didn’t need much verbal communication during games, and we played with great confidence.
“I think the interaction with Modrić and Casemiro came very close to perfection.”
Kroos has been included in the squad for Euro 2024, where he will play his final game as a professional.
